- Post 1 Outline
1. Xiafu as an Ecofeminist novella
a. Parallels between raping Lin Shi and butchering pigs: plight of women and animals is similar
i. Knife v. penis
ii. Squealing v. screaming
iii. Male gets same feeling from butchering and sex
b. Other aspects of nature in Xiafu
i. Weather phenomena: Lin Shi’s life is reflected in weather patterns
1. environment affects human life
c. Similarities between bloody water on floor in slaughterhouse and dirtiness around well
i. Bloody water: result of slaughtering pigs which is compared to raping Lin Shi
ii. Environment around well: result of dirty laundry (gossip) being done which is also very harmful to Lin Shi
1. Asks the question: is the raping or the gossip more harmful to LinShi
a. One could argue that it is Auntie Ah Wang’s gossip that is more hurtful
i. Before Ah Wang’s attempted hanging and decision to turn on Lin Shi, she at least had one pleasant aspect of her life
ii. She heard Ah Wang and other women talking about her which hurt her feelings and led her to do things that caused her more pain, i.e. not screaming when he was taking advantage of her
iii. In the end, Ah Wang’s stories even ruined her reputation in death
1. she got revenge on man but not on Ah Wang
2. Not a single good female character, whereas man that gives her food and Ah Wang’s son can be considered good male characters
a. Asks the question: is this really a feminist novel?
b. If there are no good female characters and, in the end, the females are just as harmful to one another as the men are to them, should we feel sorry for the women, or just for the animals
1. Xiafu in the context of “The Politics of Meat”
a. Many of Adams’ points are features of Xiafu
i. Knife/penis, meat/women, butcher/rape
ii. Killing of pets as a form of abuse
1. ducks are killed
2. Parts of Adams’ discourse I don’t agree with:
a. Assembly line as a degradation to human productivity
i. Assembly line made group as a whole more productive
1. did not hurt individuals’ perceptions of themselves as much as it helped the confidence and output of the whole
b. Comparison of women and animals as victims in all circumstances of male aggression is unfair to animals
i. Women dress provocatively to entice/garner men’s attention。Sometimes this kind of behavior is a reason why men treat women as objects: because women sometimes voluntarily take on that role
ii. But animals do not try to seduce butchers
1. animals are more innocent that women

例如:“The weather really began to turn cold. Even in the daytime, the chilly, gusty wind blowing in from the distant horizon turned dry and blustery, churning and sweeping up the yellow sand from the beach. Whipping by, it stung hands and faces already numbed by the winter cold. Lin Shi’s indifference finally brought Chen Jiangshui’s wrath down upon her” (125).

“He seldom wore an apron because, with all his years of experience, his clothes were rarely dirtied by pig’s blood. But the layer of water that always accumulated on the floor was another matter, making high boots an absolute necessity” (16).
用英文:the saying “airing dirty laundry” means to gossip. 他说:“She stopped in her tracks and listened closely. Yes, someone inside was talking about her, someone with a hoarse, raspy voice- it had to be Auntie Ah-ang... “Take me, for instance. I was prepared to kill myself if that’s what it took to show I had the courage of my convictions. That’s all a person needs to get by in this world.” The tone of her voice became contemptuous: “A person doesn’t have to moan and groan all the time to try to make people believe she’s having a good time. It’s people like that who give all women a bad name” (100-101).
他说:“Time and exposure to the elements had turned the bright red bricks of the wall into a water-soaked dull red. Moist green moss flourished at the base of the well, which was slick and dank” (31).
Thoughts on “The Sexual Politics of Meat”
With this opinion I have only one issue: I think it is unfair to animals to compare their unfortunate fates to those of women in all circumstances.
Women are sometimes deserving of their objectification because of the clothes they wear and certain behavior that may provoke men to treat them as objects. When women dress provocatively or act especially flirty, they do so only for the attention that it garners them. Therefore, when women behave in this manor, one cannot place all of the blame for their objectification on men. They must take a little bit of the responsibility.
Contrastingly, animals have not been known to clad themselves in skimpy clothing in order to taunt men. Unless one counts the Muppets, Miss Piggy, animals are pretty much innocent, as far as provocation goes. Therefore, women’s and animals’ objectification is different: in some cases, women ask for theirs, whereas animals do not.
